“Snow Watching”
by Deborah Gregg
Gourds still waiting to brought in, the very last of the garden chores, and its still not too cold to spend time outside perched on the garden fence with Muscles the mouse, a good friend, doing a little snow watching. Yes, I know, she tends to zero in on just the one snowflake and those beautiful green eyes go a little bit cross eyed!

It wasn’t snowing when the girls left for the Farmers Market. But here they are, walking back triumphantly, each of them carrying a pumpkin of their own ( very few left so they felt very lucky indeed!) that includes Daisy their little Papillon dog. The snow is flying and its cold enough that its beginning to stick, but they don’t care, they’ve got pumpkins!

Such a lovely autumn night that the ladies decided to have a nice hot cup of decaf coffee out on the footbridge and watch that big harvest moon come up. Merrywether shows off her new functionally smart hair-do, looking for a reaction. So kindly keeping their honest thoughts to themselves…..”what the heck did you do?! How does it stay up there like that? Its extreme, extremely funny looking that is….” Instead they said what she wanted to hear…”wow! its beautiful!….Very smart look, and you’re right, now your hat will stay on no matter how windy it is!”…..And of course, “You have never looked more lovely, good job!” We all need friends that do a little fudging now and again.

The old wizard has a speaking engagement for Halloween some distance from his home. He and his companions, Ezmarelda, a barn owl, and Tar, a cranky old crow, have been traveling for three days now and the wizards feet are tired and sore. So he made camp early and enjoys tea by the campfire, rubbing his achy feet as he watches the brilliant night sky, rewarded with an amazing shooting star streaming down from the heavens.:0) A tiny, primitive style folk art painting done with acrylics on acid free, 140 lb. watercolor paper. The autumn night is chilly but sales are brisk. Not everyone has a green thumb, and some years its just not good for pumpkins. But the pumpkin man always has the best pumpkins despite the summer weather and he has great prices too. And there’s just one other thing that makes him so special. He’s willing to bring a load of pumpkins to sell to a certain clientele late at night, on an almost deserted road. He seems to understand. They just don’t feel comfortable in town. Well why ever not I wonder??? (perhaps its their fashion style….I’m just sayin)) :0) A small, primitive style folk art painting done with acrylics on acid free, 140 lb. watercolor paper. Oh Autumn! Its a rich, full and wonderful time. A few of the spring peas decided to celebrate the season by roasting marshmallows and sharing a pot of hot cocoa on an open camp fire at the edge of the woods. In hindsight, they did build the fire a bit too close to the woods. They were warned. At this time of the year, with Halloween just around the corner, spooks are about, and they love to hang out in the woods. Sounds like a horror film setting up?Well…… the peas didn’t know it then but they know it now, most spooks are just big wind bags.Give them a marshmallow or two (they like em with one end charred black) and they are happy enough. Needless to say, they couldn’t burn those marshmallows fast enough!

The Halloween get together has turned out to be a lot of fun. The outhouse, placed a respectable distant from the bonfire, has a small line forming and at the end of the line,Good Grief, Jack, a sweet spirited Jack O’ Lantern, is having a smoke. Yes, it looks like he’s smoking again! Don’t worry, when the witch’s see this they will cast a spooky little spell on him (to help him, not hurt him) and that will be the end of it!

Its ever so quiet at first but its there…. a shift in the seasons, as one begins to let go, another settles in. The quilts are brought out and cleaned and aired for the chilly, raw nights of autumn and winter. The geese begin to fly in groups, preparing to go south. The fall garden thrives in the cool days, and skies grow moody and wild. Welcome Autumn!
